Just when it seemed the Royals had hit rock bottom, they proved once again they can lose in unexpected ways.
If you’re not familiar with the reference, there was a classic comic strip called Peanuts by Charles Schulz. One recurring joke features Charlie Brown trying to kick a football, only to have Lucy pull it away at the last moment. It’s a metaphor for the Royals—full of hope, only to face disappointment.
In a recent game, the Royals found themselves trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning. Seth Lugo pitched well, giving up just one run and striking out six. However, a single home run in the first inning and a couple of errors allowed the opposing team, the Texas Rangers, to build their lead.
Then, something changed. In the seventh inning, the Royals picked apart the Rangers’ bullpen, scoring four runs. Isaac Collins kicked things off with a double, and soon lead-off hitter Carter Jensen brought him home. Vinnie Pasquantino, who hadn’t been hitting well, finally got an RBI double, giving the Royals a brief lead. Unfortunately, Maikel Garcia hurt his hamstring during the excitement and is likely headed for the injured list.
As the eighth inning rolled in, it felt like the Royals might pull off a win. But things soured again. Daniel Lynch struggled on the mound and was replaced by John Schreiber. With a couple of key plays, the Royals managed to hold on—barely.
Heading into the ninth, Lucas Erceg took the mound. Once a reliable closer, he’s had a rough week, allowing eight runs across three appearances. His ERA has nearly doubled, and it seems like his luck has run out.
In a dramatic turn, the opposing team launched a home run that cut into the Royals’ lead. After a series of blunders, the Rangers tied the game and then clinched a walk-off victory, leaving the Royals stunned yet again.
Erceg’s performance raises questions about his future as the closer. Even with Matt Strahm returning, the bullpen looks shaky at best. As GM J. J. Picollo recently stated, the team needs to keep believing and searching for answers.
As the Royals prepare for their next game, they hope to find some stability. Michael Wacha is set to pitch next, but the uncertainty lingers. The Royals face a tough road ahead.
