Kathmandu — Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle recently shared a budget plan aimed at enhancing Nepal’s forests, environment, and climate adaptation efforts. He has earmarked around Rs 1 billion for vital initiatives like water conservation, pond creation, landslide control, and building embankments to support the water cycle in the Chure and Tarai-Madhesh regions.
A notable aspect of the plan is the focus on local economies. Wagle announced efforts to establish a support price for herbs and non-timber forest products. A new herb processing center is set to be built in Karnali, which could boost local employment and promote sustainable development.
Moreover, the government aims to implement a results-based REDD+ program. This initiative will prioritize local communities in sharing the benefits from carbon emission reductions, recognizing their crucial role in environmental conservation.
To ensure better management of natural resources, the minister discussed innovative approaches like using drones and satellites to gather real-time data for controlling wildfires. Additionally, a human-wildlife coexistence program will be introduced in areas prone to conflicts.
Wagle also prioritized tackling air pollution by upgrading air quality measurement centers in major cities and enhancing the central environment laboratory.
In total, the budget allocates Rs 12.31 billion to support these initiatives. Experts stress that addressing environmental concerns is not just about funding; it’s also about engaging local communities and ensuring sustainable practices. According to a recent survey, 75% of Nepalis believe that improving environmental health is essential for the country’s future.
With these ambitious plans in place, Nepal aims to take significant steps toward environmental sustainability, balancing economic growth and ecological health.
