Renovations are on the way for Cavanaugh, Farley, and Zahm Halls on North Quad, according to University Architect Dan Cook. The specific timeline for these projects is still being worked out.
Cavanaugh Hall was built in 1936 and became a women’s residence in 1994. It currently accommodates 211 residents. Zahm Hall, established in 1937, has recently transitioned from serving men to providing temporary housing for those affected by ongoing renovations. Farley Hall has been a women’s residence since 1973 and can house 215 women, although it once served 330 male freshmen.
These halls haven’t seen major updates in a long time. Interestingly, Keenan and Stanford Halls, built in 1957, are still functioning as men’s residences, connecting through a shared chapel and foyer. Keenan houses about 250 residents, while Stanford accommodates around 230.
In a broader context, only Breen-Phillips Hall received an update last year, illustrating the need for renovations across many North Quad locations. Breen-Phillips, built in 1939, now holds 162 residents, making it the smallest residence on North Quad.
St. Edward’s Hall and Lewis Hall are also part of North Quad, though they don’t connect to the main green space. St. Edward’s began as a boarding school in 1882 and became a residence hall for college students in 1929. It had renovations after a fire in 1981. Meanwhile, Lewis Hall was originally built in 1965 for graduate students before becoming an undergraduate residence in 1972 and has not seen major upgrades since.
North Quad, covering about 3.4 acres, features over three-quarters of a mile of sidewalk, creating a vibrant space for students. Despite the university not commenting on future upgrades, there’s a clear interest in enhancing student life and amenities in these historic halls.
As universities across the country update their facilities, student reactions to dorm quality are often shared on social media, highlighting a growing demand for modern living conditions that blend comfort with history. Recent data shows that students at schools with upgraded facilities report higher satisfaction, emphasizing the importance of renovation projects like those planned for North Quad.
