“Backrooms” Dominates Global Box Office Amid International Buzz

The horror film Backrooms, directed by Kane Parsons, has become a massive hit, raking in $118 million globally in its opening weekend. This figure includes $36 million from international markets, surpassing expectations and beating out other recent horror films.

Latin America led the charge, bringing in an impressive $12.7 million—making it the top film in that market. This is over three times the previous A24 record for an opening weekend.

In the UK, Backrooms also shone bright, earning $5.6 million, which is not only the highest for an A24 film but also the best horror opening of the year so far. Australia/New Zealand contributed $4.4 million, marking it as one of the highest-grossing horror titles of the decade, nearly doubling the previous A24 opening.

Significant performances also came from South Korea and the Middle East, with the film making $2.7 million and $2.4 million respectively.

Looking ahead, Backrooms will soon release in Spain, Russia, and other key markets. The anticipation for its success is palpable.

On another note, Disney’s The Mandalorian and Grogu saw a steep drop in box office revenue, coming in at $52.8 million globally. In comparison, Backrooms started strong and is expected to maintain its momentum.

Meanwhile, Focus Features’ Obsession drew in $40.2 million this weekend, with its global total reaching $148 million. In India, it led the box office with a weekend haul of $900,000.

Lastly, Lionsgate’s Michael, depicting the life of Michael Jackson, has amassed $846.2 million globally. It’s poised to break records set by Bohemian Rhapsody.

With diverse genres dominating the box office, horror seems to be capturing more fans worldwide. What will this mean for future film releases? Only time will tell.
