On Sunday, an explosive-laden drone struck an IDF position near Beit Hillel, resulting in minor injuries to four soldiers. Tragically, another Israeli soldier, 21-year-old Staff Sgt. Michael Tyukin, was killed during clashes near the castle.
Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces are committed to advancing their positions in southern Lebanon. Following the latest military actions, troops expanded their operations beyond the Litani River. Videos showed Israeli and IDF flags flying over the historic fortress.
Historically, Beaufort Castle has been a contentious symbol since it was first captured during the First Lebanon War in 1982. Israel held it until its withdrawal in 2000 after a long conflict that claimed many lives. Netanyahu reflected on this history, declaring, “Today, we have returned united, determined, and stronger than ever.”
He noted that Israel has faced significant threats since the Hamas-led attacks in October 2023 and claimed that Israel has eliminated around 8,000 Hezbollah fighters during the ongoing conflict.
Beaufort Castle, located about five kilometers from the Israeli border, is strategically valuable, providing a commanding view of northern Israel and southern Lebanon. Defense Minister Israel Katz viewed the capture as a clear warning to those who threaten Israel’s citizens, asserting that military operations would continue until Israel’s security is assured.
In response to these developments, France called for a UN Security Council meeting to address the escalating situation. French officials stressed the need for diplomacy, while Israeli representatives insisted that the focus should be on Hezbollah’s violations of international agreements.
