Heavy rain is hitting several regions this holiday weekend, disrupting travel across the country. Areas like Northland, Nelson, and Golden Bay are especially at risk of flooding as a powerful weather system moves in.
According to MetService, a trough in the humid air is bringing significant rain. Some places have already seen large amounts of rainfall, with more on the way. Forecasters are closely monitoring Northland, Golden Bay, and Nelson as these are likely to be among the worst affected regions.
MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Marshall shared that Kaitaia experienced nearly 30 millimeters of rain in just one hour early Monday morning. This kind of persistent rain can cause serious flooding issues.
Further south, Mount Cook recorded an impressive 147 millimeters in a single day, while parts of Nelson got around 200mm on Sunday. Orange rain warnings are now in effect for Westland, parts of Tasman District, and the Ranges of Buller. Heavy rain watches are also in place for other areas in the South Island.
While the West Coast communities are used to heavy rain, emergency teams in Marlborough are on alert as rising river levels could lead to flooding, especially near Dalton’s Bridge on State Highway 6.
The Marlborough District Council warned locals about potential flooding due to the Pelorus River’s rising levels. Additionally, prolonged rainfall is expected if the weather system slows down over the Richmond Ranges.
