Phil McClintock Returns to Ottawa University as Athletic Director
Ottawa University has welcomed back alumnus Phil McClintock as the new Director of Athletics, starting June 1. McClintock graduated from Ottawa in 2009 and is recognized in the Braves Athletic Hall of Fame. He brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as the head men’s basketball coach at Friends University.
Dr. Bambi Burgard, the campus president, says, “Phil embodies the spirit of Ottawa University. His dedication to developing student-athletes and his leadership experience make him perfect for this role. We’re thrilled to have him and his family back.”
One of McClintock’s inspirations is his former coach, Andy Carrier. Carrier was a cornerstone of Braves Athletics for over 30 years, fostering a culture of excellence. McClintock attributes much of his growth to Carrier’s guidance.
During his time as a student-athlete, McClintock achieved NAIA Honorable Mention All-America honors and led his team to impressive victories, including a conference championship and two Sweet 16 appearances. He even contributed as a coach at Ottawa for eight years, guiding the men’s basketball team to a record-breaking 28-win season in 2020.
At Friends University, McClintock took the men’s basketball program to new heights. He emphasized a strong culture and academic success, achieving back-to-back National Tournament appearances. Notably, his players have maintained an impressive GPA of 3.3, showcasing the balance between athletics and academics.
“I’m honored to return to Ottawa,” McClintock shared. “The university shaped my life, and I’m excited to work with everyone to build a championship culture here.”
McClintock’s appointment comes after the leadership of interim co-directors Jay Kahnt and Dr. Donald Anderson, who provided stability during the transition. Their support was crucial, and they will continue to work closely with McClintock.
Ottawa University competes in one of the largest athletic programs in the NAIA and is part of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. With McClintock at the helm, there’s a renewed energy looking forward to a bright future for Braves Athletics.
