SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – There’s exciting news for the Upper Truckee Marsh. The Tahoe Fund and Barton Health have kicked off a fresh fundraising drive aimed at revitalizing this crucial area in South Lake Tahoe, previously home to a Motel 6. The goal? To gather 250 community members who can donate $50 or more by June 30. If they succeed, Barton Health will match these contributions with a generous $25,000. This effort could be a game-changer for restoring the marsh.
Amy Berry, the CEO of Tahoe Fund, emphasized the importance of community backing. “Our partners at Barton Health have always focused on improving our environment. Local support is vital for us to secure needed public funds. Together, we can unlock this matching gift,” she said.
This initiative follows the Tahoe Fund’s earlier “Million for the Marsh” campaign, which successfully raised the first million dollars in private funding in just three months. These funds are crucial for obtaining additional public financing from the California Tahoe Conservancy for marsh restoration. The current campaign not only boosts efforts for lake clarity but also enhances natural habitats and recreation opportunities for the community.
Dr. Clint Purvance, president and CEO of Barton Health, shared how health and environment are deeply connected. “A healthy community thrives in a healthy environment. Restoring this marsh benefits lake clarity and provides a space for locals to enjoy nature,” he explained.
Restoration projects like this one hold significant promise. According to the Tahoe Fund, improved marshland can increase biodiversity and improve water quality, leading to fewer pollutants entering the lake. A recent study showed that well-maintained wetlands can reduce nitrogen levels by up to 70%. This makes a clear case for why investing in the marsh is essential for the community and the environment.
Community involvement is crucial. Many locals are already enthusiastic about the project, sharing their thoughts on social media. Posts reflect pride, with comments highlighting the beauty of the area and the importance of preserving it for future generations. It’s clear that residents understand the value of a healthy ecosystem.
