Myles Garrett got his wish: a chance to play on a winning team. The Cleveland Browns traded the two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year to the Los Angeles Rams in a major deal. In return, the Browns received pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks.
Garrett shined last season, racking up an impressive 23 sacks and setting a new NFL single-season record. Now, he’s set to join forces with Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, last season’s MVP. This marks a unique moment, as these two top players will be teammates for the first time.
General manager Andrew Berry managed to make this trade work by reworking Garrett’s contract, allowing him to defer some payments. It was a tough call; Garrett had been the face of the Browns’ defense. Despite a four-year contract extension worth over $204 million, he wanted a change after Cleveland’s struggles.
Cleveland had a rough two seasons, going 8-26 after a playoff appearance in 2023. Berry reflected on the challenging decision: “We were at a crossroads: do we hold onto a generational player or do what’s best for the long run?”
The Browns now have Jared Verse, the 2024 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, plus valuable draft picks for future growth. The team’s owners acknowledged the difficulty of trading Garrett but recognized the need to strengthen a young roster.
Garrett expressed his mixed emotions, thanking Cleveland for shaping him over nearly a decade. He noted, “Cleveland taught me about perseverance and loyalty.”
In contrast, the Rams’ track record paints a brighter picture. With a 92-57 record since 2017, they’ve had seven playoff appearances and even secured a Super Bowl title in 2021. The trade positions them as Super Bowl favorites again.
This isn’t the Rams’ first big move. General manager Les Snead has a history of trading draft picks for star players. For instance, he brought in cornerback Jalen Ramsey in 2019, which helped solidify their fame in the league. Just earlier this season, the Rams reinforced their secondary with another major trade.
Despite a difficult recent season, the Rams are looking formidable, with Stafford leading a high-powered offense and now bolstered by Garrett’s prowess. Statistics show that Garrett is the first player to achieve over 12 sacks for six straight seasons and has consistently been among the league’s top pass rushers.
As Garrett teams up with the Rams, he joins a young but aggressive defense ready for a title run. This trade not only affects their teams but also speaks to the ongoing evolution of player mobility in the NFL.
