In Kansas City, Missouri, two Pittsburg State University legends have made their mark in the MIAA Hall of Fame Class of 2026. Dennis Franchione, a former head football coach and athletic director, and Lizzy Jeronimus, a four-time All-American in women’s basketball, were celebrated during the MIAA Awards Celebration.
Franchione led the Gorillas from 1985 to 1989, achieving an impressive 53-6 record. Under his guidance, the team secured five consecutive conference championships and made a smooth transition to the MIAA and NCAA Division II. Remarkably, in their first season in the MIAA, the Gorillas won the championship, dominating their opponents.
Jeronimus, a groundbreaking player in Pitt State history, holds the record for the most points scored in the women’s basketball program (2,226) and rebounds (838). She became the first player in the program to earn All-America honors throughout all four of her seasons. Her standout year was in 2015, where she scored 626 points, helping the team reach the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
The event also honored other athletes and coaches across the MIAA, including Central Missouri’s Justin Yoder and Emporia State’s Miranda Campbell.
Pitt State’s athletic achievements didn’t stop there. The university recently won its fifth consecutive Commissioner’s Cup, awarded to the top-performing institution in the MIAA based on overall sports performance. They earned eight MIAA championships during the 2025-26 academic year, and their track and field programs stood out as they swept both indoor and outdoor championships for the third consecutive year.
The Commissioner’s Cup is not just a trophy; it represents hard work and dedication. An average of 11.67 points per sport helped the Gorillas claim their spot at the top. This continued excellence demonstrates the university’s commitment to student-athlete achievement.
Franchione’s career didn’t end with Pitt State. After leaving, he enjoyed a 23-year coaching career in NCAA Division I, accumulating 213 wins and four bowl victories. Meanwhile, Jeronimus is now shaping future sales professionals as part of Pitt State’s Professional Sales Advisory Board, connecting current students with industry insights.
This recent recognition highlights the lasting legacy of both individuals, showcasing the university’s commitment to fostering talent in sports and academics alike. As more athletes and supporters rally behind them, the spirit of Pitt State continues to thrive.
