DeSoto Parish Students Triumph in State Culinary Championship: A Taste of Victory!

Four students from DeSoto Parish recently triumphed at the Louisiana 4-H Food Challenge, outpacing more than 40 teams from across the state. This event pushes young chefs to whip up a healthy meal using limited ingredients, testing their creativity, food safety skills, and ability to present their work to judges.

Meet the young winners: Cooper Berhat, Cooper Boyd, Riker Rohrer, and Cash Wheless, all between 9 and 12 years old. Their passion for cooking started early. “I’ve always enjoyed getting in the kitchen. It’s rewarding to see the effort turn into something delicious,” Cooper Berhat shared. Riker, who’s been cooking since fourth grade, echoed this sentiment.

The competition not only promotes cooking skills but also teaches valuable life lessons. “They learn about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating,” said their 4-H leader, Ami Altom. This experience could shape them into leaders in the future, equipping them with skills that reach beyond the kitchen.

A unique part of their team dynamic includes a small token they carry for inspiration. “We keep a little Jesus in our pocket for calmness and strength,” said Cash Wheless.

Their journey is a great reminder for anyone interested in cooking: starting small is key. “Even if you’re just a little curious, jump in the kitchen! You can create something great, whether using frozen foods or simple ingredients,” Berhat encouraged.
