Kaiser relies on the Vance North Necessities of Life Program, the largest food pantry in the U.S. dedicated to HIV clients. “I haven’t had to buy groceries in years,” he says. This generosity greatly impacts his life and those of many others.
The pantry supports over 3,000 individuals with HIV, especially during tough economic times. Clients like John Carey find it essential. “Food prices are high, and both my partner and I are unemployed,” he explains. Access to this pantry allows them to stay afloat.
Jeff Bailey, a director at APLA Health, explains that the program is designed to help low-income individuals. “It’s a lifesaver,” Carey adds, highlighting the importance of this support.
The Necessities of Life Program offers various food options, even personal hygiene items like toilet paper. During the pandemic, many faced shortages, but the pantry continued to provide for its clients. Ramiro Salazar, also with APLA Health, acknowledges that none of this would be possible without the community’s volunteers. Recently, staff from Eyewitness News stepped in to assist, bringing groceries and hygiene products.
