UN Calls for Urgent Climate Action Amid Rising Global Temperatures

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for accelerated climate action, noting that the world has recorded its 11th warmest year and global temperatures continue to rise. His comments were made in a video message prior to World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, during an event organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) China Office in Beijing.

Guterres highlighted the significant impacts of climate change on ecosystems, biodiversity, public health, and economies globally. He urged nations to enhance their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Stephen Jackson, the UN Resident Coordinator in China, stated that the UN system is prepared to bolster cooperation with China and other partners on renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, sustainable urban development, and green finance.

Wang Qian, head of the UNEP Office for China, emphasized the critical nature of climate change as a pressing challenge and the importance of translating climate awareness into concrete actions.

Since its establishment in 1972, World Environment Day has served as a significant platform for environmental advocacy. This year’s celebrations focused on climate change and included community-based events aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues and promoting sustainable lifestyles.
