Anthony Mackie is stepping into the role of Captain America in the new film “Captain America: Brave New World.” It’s set to hit theaters just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Mackie recently spoke with ABC7 about taking his place in the Marvel Universe and his excitement for Mardi Gras in his hometown of New Orleans. He describes his version of Sam Wilson, saying this character brings a fresh vibe to the iconic role.
“I have to talk my way out of situations instead of just punching my way through,” Mackie explained. He believes Sam has a unique blend of humanity and compassion, which makes him relatable. “He represents the everyday person,” Mackie said, highlighting that Sam is the best part of all of us.
Audiences can also expect some incredible flying scenes in this film. Mackie praised director Julius Onah for pushing the limits of stunts and flight. “We have no limitations. We have the wings, the shield, the suit; how can we make it better?”
Representation matters to Mackie. He believes it’s important for kids of all backgrounds to see a Black Captain America. “We live in a different world now. The backyard looks like a crayon box with all the kids running around,” he said. He sees this as an opportunity to inspire a new generation.
As a native of New Orleans, Mackie is eagerly anticipating this year’s Mardi Gras. “A celebration’s coming, it is going down!” he exclaimed. This year, Shaquille O’Neal will be the king of Bacchus, and Mackie will be riding on the next float behind him. It promises to be an exciting time in the city.
The film “Captain America: Brave New World” will have its first showings on the afternoon of February 13.
