Remembering Tony Roberts: Celebrated Stage and Film Actor from Woody Allen’s Classics Passes Away at 85

NEW YORK – Tony Roberts, a beloved theater actor known for his roles in both plays and musicals, has passed away at the age of 85. His daughter, Nicole Burley, shared the sad news.

Roberts was a familiar face on Broadway and starred in notable productions like “How Now, Dow Jones,” “Sugar,” and “Victor/Victoria,” where he shared the stage with the iconic Julie Andrews. He even took part in the quirky disco musical “Xanadu” and had a role in “The Royal Family.”

In his memoir, “Do You Know Me?”, Roberts reflected on his life. He mentioned how he had always dreamed of being an actor. Unlike many of his friends, he knew his passion early on. “I’ve never been particularly lucky at card games. But I have been extremely lucky in life,” he wrote.

Roberts also had a strong connection with filmmaker Woody Allen. They worked together on the Broadway play “Don’t Drink the Water,” and he appeared in classic Allen films like “Annie Hall” and “Hannah and Her Sisters.” Critics often praised his ability to complement Allen’s neurotic characters, enhancing the humor on screen.

In the film “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy,” Roberts was amazed at Allen’s dedication to his craft. He admired how much effort went into making each scene perfect, noting that nothing was ever accidental in Allen’s work.

Throughout his career, Roberts was recognized for his talent, receiving two Tony Award nominations. One of his major successes was in Charles Busch’s comedy “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife,” where he played the husband of the main character.

In addition to his Broadway career, Roberts acted in films like “Serpico” and “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.” He also made a mark on television in series like “The Four Seasons” and “The Lucie Arnaz Show,” along with guest spots on popular shows like “Murder, She Wrote.”

Born in New York on October 22, 1939, to broadcaster Ken Roberts, Tony grew up in a world filled with actors. He often cited his family connections as inspiration for his own path. He studied at the High School of Music and Art and graduated from Northwestern University.

Roberts is remembered not just for his performances but also for his warm personality. He leaves behind his daughter, Nicole Burley, and many cherished memories on stage and screen.
