Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party is making waves in a key regional election in New Delhi. For many years, voters here resisted Modi’s Hindu-centric approach, but this time things seem different.
As of Saturday afternoon, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in the assembly elections, possibly securing more seats than the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been in charge for the past decade. The assembly has 70 seats, and the BJP needs 36 to take control. Early results showed the BJP winning 11 seats and leading in 37, while AAP had won 10 and was ahead in another 12.
Modi celebrated the results, declaring that “development wins, good governance triumphs” on social media. In a concession video, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal acknowledged the BJP’s victory, saying, “We accept the people’s mandate and congratulate the Bharatiya Janata Party. I hope they will fulfill the hopes that the people have placed in them.”
