Tony Roberts, a talented theater performer and Tony Award nominee, has passed away at the age of 85. His daughter, Nicole Burley, confirmed the news.
Roberts was known for his warm personality that shone brightly in musical comedies. He played key roles in Broadway shows like “How Now, Dow Jones” (1967), “Sugar” (1972), and “Victor/Victoria” (1995) alongside Julie Andrews. His last performances included “Xanadu” in 2007 and “The Royal Family” in 2009.
In his memoir, “Do You Know Me?”, Roberts shared, “I’ve never been particularly lucky at card games… But I have been extremely lucky in life.” He realized he wanted to be an actor before even entering high school.
Roberts also collaborated with Woody Allen on Broadway and in films. He was part of the Broadway production of “Don’t Drink the Water” (1966) and appeared in the movie, too. His roles in Allen’s films, such as “Annie Hall” (1977) and “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986), showcased his ability to complement Allen’s quirky characters. The Jewish Daily Forward once noted that Roberts’ confident presence made even Allen’s neurotic characters more enjoyable.
Besides his work with Allen, Roberts acted in other films like “Serpico” (1973) and “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” (1974). He was nominated for Tony Awards for both “How Now, Dow Jones” and “Play It Again, Sam.” One of his notable Broadway successes was in “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” (2000), where he played the lead character’s husband.
Roberts started his Broadway journey in 1962 and was part of many long-running shows, including “Barefoot in the Park” and “Cabaret.” He reflected on his experience, stating, “I was lucky enough to get in on the last years of the Golden Age of Broadway,” emphasizing the quality and passion in the productions of that time.
He also starred in the West End production of “Promises, Promises,” and had television roles in shows like “Murder, She Wrote” and “Law & Order.” Born on October 22, 1939, in New York, Roberts came from a family steeped in the entertainment world. His father was a well-known radio and television announcer, Ken Roberts. He pursued his education at the High School of Music and Art and later graduated from Northwestern University.
Roberts is survived by his daughter, Nicole. He met Woody Allen backstage while starring in “Barefoot in the Park,” leading to a fruitful collaboration. Despite struggling with auditions, Allen recognized Roberts’ talent and ultimately cast him in his productions.
