RAPID CITY, S.D. – A new Native American-owned restaurant has opened its doors in downtown Rapid City. It’s called The Hangry Buffalo, and it began as a food truck back in 2021.
The journey to the restaurant started during the pandemic. Sophia Cordero, co-owner of The Hangry Buffalo, shared how they began cooking meals for Indigenous families who struggled to access food. This community effort paved the way for their restaurant.
The Hangry Buffalo is located at 523 Main Street and is open Monday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It shares space with Diamond E Collective. Sophia explained their focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, especially bison, which aligns with their commitment to healthy food options.
You can still catch the food truck at The Flying J until April, operating Thursday through Saturday from noon until midnight (or until sold out). Both the food truck and restaurant offer the same great menu, but the restaurant plans to introduce new dishes, giving customers more variety.
This summer, the restaurant will add fresh fish flown in from Alaska. They also feature Mexican cuisine with tacos, burritos, and a signature dish called the B-21 burrito, inspired by family recipes. According to customers, it’s the largest burrito in town.
In addition to the food truck and restaurant, the Corderos run a catering business. Their daughter has her own venture called The Little Buffalo Charcuterie and Sweets.
