The Marion L. Steele High EcoLeague is excited to kick off its fourth annual February Food Drive in Amherst and nearby areas. This event lasts the whole month, encouraging everyone to pitch in and support the community.
All donations will be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. EcoLeague advisor and high school science teacher Angie DeLeon highlights the role of students in initiating this drive. “The students really wanted to keep collecting food for the community,” she said.
You can find donation boxes at more than 20 locations around town, including local favorites like Amherst Animal Hospital, Hot Dog Heaven, and the Amherst Public Library. We’re hopeful that more businesses will join us,” DeLeon added.
This year’s drive focuses on gathering nonperishable food items like canned goods, pasta, and peanut butter, as well as personal hygiene products such as diapers, wipes, toothpaste, and soap. The goal is to support families in need, not just in Amherst but throughout the entire county.
DeLeon is inspired by the growing community support. “Every year, more people seem to donate,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of involvement from businesses outside the city. “It shows that this effort helps everyone.”
The EcoLeague, a student-led organization, aims to promote environmental awareness and engage in service projects. DeLeon explained that the idea for the food drive came from students who wanted to make a positive impact in their community. She believes this generation often gets unfair criticism, saying, “I see a lot of good in them, especially in the kids involved in EcoLeague.” They truly shine with their commitment to helping others.
