After just over a year with union representation from IATSE Local 938, employees at Vancouver’s Kickstart Entertainment have chosen to leave the Canadian Animation Guild. This move was unanimously supported by the staff.
The British Columbia Labour Relations Board confirmed this decision in late January. Workers expressed a desire to improve communication, restore a fluid workplace, and maintain the collaborative spirit that defines their studio culture, according to a February statement from Kickstart.
Barry Karnowski, a senior CG supervisor and employee representative, emphasized the importance of an open work culture. He stated, “This decision was a collective effort to strengthen our relationship and enhance our work environment.”
IATSE Local 938 president Eddy Pedreira commented on the situation, saying that the choice to join or leave a union should always be democratic. He noted that not every decision would go as hoped, but that is part of workplace democracy. “It’s something we will always respect,” he added.
Kickstart, like many studios, is facing industry challenges. Pedreira highlighted that while unions can offer benefits and protections, they can’t change how a company operates. He expressed disappointment that the contract negotiations had not advanced further but reaffirmed that the Guild would welcome the employees back if they ever changed their minds.
Byron Leboe, a senior art director and fellow employee representative, stated that this choice reflects the trust employees have in Kickstart’s leadership. He said, “We’re focused on creating a positive and supportive environment where we can thrive together.”
Kickstart joined the union in January 2024, becoming the third Canadian animation studio to do so, after WildBrain and Titmouse. During the days leading to their unionization, the pressure from stagnant wages and rising living costs drove Vancouver’s animation workers to seek collective bargaining.
Although it’s not clear how far the negotiation process had gotten before the decision to exit, Kickstart president Heather Puttock reaffirmed the importance of collaboration between management and staff. “Our employees are at the heart of Kickstart,” she stated. “Their voices shape the studio’s future, and we are dedicated to ensuring everyone feels valued and empowered in a collaborative environment.”
