Students like Sabrina Estevez, a sophomore at Ohio State University, expressed their fears about what this bill could mean for their education. She noted that the value of a degree from Ohio would diminish if the bill is enacted. Another student, Tara Godwin, who moved from Utah to continue her studies at Ohio State, stated she wouldn’t have chosen Ohio had she known about this bill. She believes it undermines faculty expertise in teaching.

Audrey Ansel, a junior at Ohio University, shared how students might seek education outside the state. She warned that this could lead to reduced enrollment and funds available to Ohio colleges. She emphasized losing the diversity of thought and experience from students. Brielle Shorter, another student, argued that silencing discussions about important issues does not solve the problems but rather exacerbates them.

Students’ opinions are backed by data. Ohio State’s undergraduate student body president shared that over 80% of surveyed students find diversity and inclusion initiatives important. This support underscores the significance of these programs in fostering a rich educational environment.

Many also raised concerns about the bill’s vague definition of diversity and inclusion, allowing for arbitrary interpretations that could harm various programs. Experts voiced alarm over the bill’s potential to impede academic freedom and weaken the educational foundation in Ohio.

Overall, the testimony presented at the committee reflects a deep concern among students and faculty about the repercussions of Senate Bill 1. They argue it could threaten the future of higher education in Ohio, as well as the state’s ability to attract and retain talent.
