FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The World Ice Art Championships are kicking off this Friday! Workers and volunteers are busy gearing up for the big day.
They are hauling in large blocks of ice, clearing the paths at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds, and carving eye-catching designs near the entrance for everyone to enjoy.
The actual carving takes place from February 14 to March 1, depending on the weather. This year, there are several categories for the competitions.
John Kohler, the Executive Director of Ice Alaska, mentioned that 12 teams have registered. These talented competitors come from all around the globe!
“We’ve got teams from Scotland, England, Japan, and even Brazil,” Kohler shared. It’s amazing to see so many cultures come together through this art form.
The ice blocks used for carving are sourced from a nearby pond, ensuring that everything is local and sustainable.
This event not only attracts artists but also draws many tourists to Fairbanks, contributing to the area’s winter tourism. Kohler emphasizes how vital this is for the local economy.
“We expect around 40,000 attendees this year,” he added. “They aren’t all from here; our hotels and restaurants will be bustling with visitors eager to make memories.”
