Last Saturday, Fairmont High School hosted a special pitching clinic led by Rick Pauly. He aimed to help young female pitchers develop their skills. With a wealth of experience as a coach on the National Team and a former All-American player, Pauly brings a lot to the table.
One of the highlights of the clinic was Sarah Pauly, Rick’s daughter and a former professional softball player. She often assists her dad, providing girls with a chance to connect with someone who has walked the path they aspire to take. “Sarah has been a part of this clinic for many years, and her presence makes a big difference,” said Fairmont softball head coach Cory Hainy. The girls enjoy talking with her, getting her autograph, and taking pictures after the sessions.
Rick’s insights into pitching are based on years of study and practice. He played for the Menomonie Blues in Wisconsin and later with the Madison Farm team, a nationally recognized ASA National Champion. His passion for teaching and nurturing talent has drawn players from multiple states, especially from Iowa. “We even had a girl from Oregon this year,” Hainy noted, indicating the clinic’s wide appeal.
This clinic isn’t just for players. Coaches also gain valuable skills and knowledge. Hainy highlighted how the methods taught at the clinic have been instrumental in improving local coaching efforts. Many coaches are now certified in Rick’s teaching methods, ensuring that the coaching techniques will continue to benefit young players for years to come.
The prices for participating are quite reasonable. The morning session focuses on basic mechanics for $150, while the afternoon session, aimed at mastering specific pitches, costs $175. Many girls return year after year, reinforcing the success of the program. “It’s great to see familiar faces coming back,” said Hainy. Some participants have attended multiple times, signaling the value they find in the instruction.
This was the ninth year for the clinic in Fairmont. It all began about a decade ago when local resident John Oothoudt reached out to Rick Pauly about holding a clinic. Their friendship led to this successful annual event that has made a significant impact in the softball community.
With its solid reputation and ongoing success, the Pauly Girl Fastpitch clinic will continue to be a key fixture in Fairmont’s softball scene. Each year, it offers players an opportunity to enhance their skills and grow their love for the game.
