Two exceptional educators from the Rialto Unified School District recently received recognition for their hard work in teaching history and social studies. Helen Johnson from Kolb Middle School and Michael Martinelli from Eisenhower High School were awarded the title of History Social Science Educators of Excellence for 2024-2025 by the Inland Empire Council for Social Studies.
The awards were presented during a ceremony at the Riverside County Office of Education on February 6. They celebrated the achievements of several outstanding teachers from San Bernardino and Riverside counties. Helen and Michael were supported by RUSD Board President Dr. Stephanie Lewis, Board Member Evelyn Dominguez, Acting Superintendent Dr. Edward D’Souza, and their families and friends.
Helen Johnson teaches eighth-grade U.S. History and is known for making history relatable to her students. She uses creative, hands-on lessons like having her students create their own Declarations of Independence, helping them understand how history impacts their lives today. Principal Tina Lingenfelter praised her, saying, “Mrs. Johnson’s passion for U.S. History is truly inspiring.”
Helen has been part of the Rialto district for 19 years. She began her career teaching kindergarten and later moved to middle school. A product of Rialto schools herself, she knows the community well and is dedicated to empowering her students as informed citizens. Reflecting on her award, she remarked, “This recognition symbolizes my journey and the support I’ve received from countless colleagues throughout my career.”
Michael Martinelli, the Social Studies Department Chair at Eisenhower High School, focuses on engaging students in real-world civics. He incorporates hands-on activities like mock trials and service learning projects, significantly helping students earn the State Seal of Civic Engagement, which honors their commitment to community involvement.
Principal Kristal Henriquez-Pulido highlighted Michael’s leadership in enhancing teaching and learning outcomes. She noted that his classroom encourages students to link historical events with today’s issues, showcasing the relevance of social sciences in understanding their world.
Since joining Eisenhower High School, Michael has also taken on the role of mentoring new teachers and contributing to various school initiatives. He values the collaboration within his team, stating, “I am honored to receive this award and grateful for the teamwork that drives our progress.”
Having grown up in Whittier, California, Michael holds degrees from California State University, Los Angeles, and Arizona State University.
The recognition of Helen and Michael reflects the commitment of the Rialto Unified School District to excellence in education and preparing students to be active and informed members of their communities.
