Birmingham Teacher Advocate Voices Concerns Over Proposed Dismantling of U.S. Education Department

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – President Trump has plans to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. This proposal has raised concerns among local educators, including Richard Franklin, who leads the Birmingham Federation of Teachers. He worries that this move could hurt students and the education system.

Franklin expressed his fears, saying, “When I hear this, I think we’re going backward. Why are we politicizing our kids?” He believes that the Department of Education provides essential support for disadvantaged and disabled students, ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed.

The Department of Education was established in 1979 and has played a critical role in funding schools, particularly those receiving Title I funding. “Before it was created, we didn’t always distribute funds fairly,” Franklin noted. He is concerned that without the department, funding might not be allocated equitably across schools.

He also fears the potential job losses in Alabama that could follow the department’s disbandment. For instance, one school district with a Head Start program could face layoffs of 55 workers, impacting 255 families in the community.

Franklin warns that losing a federal oversight body could lead to inconsistencies in education. States might choose only certain subjects or curricula to teach, which could disadvantage students. “You’re not just affecting adults; you’re affecting kids,” he emphasized.

At a confirmation hearing, Linda McMahon stated that maintaining Title I funding for low-income schools, Pell Grants for college students, and Public Service Loan Forgiveness would remain priorities. She assured that the administration intends to approach these changes carefully.
