MERIDIAN, Miss. – February is American Heart Month, a time when we focus on heart health. This month highlights why caring for our hearts is vital for everyone.

On Friday afternoon, Northpark Church hosted the Heart-Healthy Lunch and Learn event. Community members came together to learn about heart health, heart disease symptoms, and ways to keep our hearts strong.

Dr. Jennifer Rodriguez, an interventional cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Institute of South in Meridian, shared key tips for maintaining a healthy heart. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death among adults in the U.S.,” she said. “We need to be mindful of our daily habits to improve our long-term health.”

She emphasized three main actions for heart health: don’t smoke, get regular exercise, and maintain a balanced diet. These simple steps can make a big difference.

Dr. Rodriguez also discussed the importance of understanding heart disease. “Once people know how certain conditions affect their heart, they can take control,” she explained. Creating an action plan to improve diet and exercise habits can help individuals make small changes each day. She hopes to inspire a community that prioritizes heart health and realizes that achieving it is more manageable than they might think.

Heart disease is a serious concern, but with awareness and action, everyone can work towards a healthier heart.
