Russell Brand has decided to close his addiction and mental health charity, according to UK media reports.
Brand started this charity after overcoming his own heroin addiction back in 2003. He often spoke out for better support for those struggling with addiction and even made a BBC documentary about it in 2013.
This closure comes in light of a 2023 investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times. Four women have accused Brand of sexual assault between 2006 and 2013. Brand has denied these allegations, claiming he is a target of a smear campaign. He recently relocated to the US from the UK.
Brand was in the spotlight earlier this year when he co-hosted a prominent BBC event shortly after a former employee refiled an old complaint regarding his conduct.
In March 2017, he hosted the BBC’s annual Comic Relief telethon, showcasing new comedy acts to raise funds for charity. This event occurred after a BBC employee re-raised a complaint from 2007 about Brand’s inappropriate behavior during the production of his Radio 2 show.
The situation has brought to light how the BBC overlooked repeated warnings about Brand’s behavior. Complaints weren’t isolated issues, raising concerns about why he continued to be hired. The BBC has since apologized for mishandling these complaints.
