The Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run returns in 2025 for its 27th year. Since it began in 1999, this event has raised an incredible $750 million for various institutions in Jamaica, making a real difference in countless lives. But long before the race starts, a dedicated group of around 600 volunteers ensures everything goes smoothly.
These volunteers play a crucial role in organizing and managing the event, working hard both leading up to race day and on the day itself. Their effort transforms the Sigma Run into a memorable occasion for everyone involved.
One of these amazing volunteers is Maureen Banton. Since the event’s inception in 1999, she has dedicated her time and energy, returning year after year without fail.
Banton’s commitment is evident in her role. In the weeks before the race, she oversees the process of labelling and verifying race kits for over 27,000 participants. It’s a challenging job, but she rises to the occasion each year.
“It’s a lot,” she admits. “There are challenges, but in the end, it’s all worth it.” Volunteering comes naturally to her. In fact, she recalls her first experience as a child during Jamaica’s 25th Independence celebrations, which sparked her passion for community service. Since then, her desire to help has only grown.
Banton’s kindness doesn’t stop at the Sigma Run. She often collects food to donate at stoplights or buys groceries for those in need. “Giving back is just who I am,” she says. “When I see someone in need, I just help.”
After over 20 years, her dedication to the Sigma Run remains strong. When asked why, she shares, “I see the impact. I see how it helps those in need, and it makes me happy.” This year, the funds raised will support the Kingston Public Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, and the Father Ho Lung & Friends Foundation, all of which assist some of Jamaica’s most vulnerable.
Banton knows how much these organizations rely on donations from events like this. “Once you see how it helps people, you can’t look away,” she explains. “Even my small role at the Sigma Secretariat makes a difference.” She believes everyone can contribute, no matter how small their efforts. “Volunteering, even in little ways, feels good. It’s about helping others.”
The Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run is more than just a race; it’s a powerful example of what we can achieve by coming together for a common goal. While the runners may be the stars crossing the finish line, it’s the hardworking volunteers like Banton who truly make it possible.
