Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed deep concern over the treatment of Indian deportees from the United States. He strongly stated that India should protest if these individuals were indeed handcuffed and shackled during their flight back home.
Tharoor voiced his dissatisfaction with the choice of a military aircraft for their return. He mentioned to ANI, “I am not happy about the Americans choosing to send a military aircraft. I have not seen any report on whether these returnees were also handcuffed and shackled. If they were, we should definitely protest.”
The C-17 military plane landed in Amritsar on Saturday night, carrying 117 Indian nationals who were deported as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration by the previous US administration. Some deportees reported that they were handcuffed and their legs chained during the flight. One deportee named Daljit shared with reporters, “Our legs were chained, and hands were also cuffed.”
This incident isn’t isolated. Previously, another C-17 aircraft brought back 104 Indian deportees on February 5. Many of these individuals alleged that they were restrained for the entire journey and only freed upon arrival.
The treatment of these deportees has sparked outrage across India. Opposition leaders have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring this matter up during his discussions with US officials. Following public concerns, India has officially raised the issue of deportee treatment with the United States.
