The Monaco Grand Prix will now require extra pit stops to spice up the action. This change comes from the latest meeting of the FIA, which leads Formula 1 regulations.
Traditionally, the Monaco GP is known as a one-stop race. Drivers often prioritize track position and tires don’t wear down quickly. The FIA believes that adding more mandatory pit stops will make the race more exciting. However, they haven’t specified how many extra stops will be required.
Additionally, the FIA has also introduced stricter tests for rear wings, responding to concerns about flexing parts. These rules will kick in at the start of the 2024 season, with front wing tests starting from the Spanish Grand Prix.
Another important update is about driver cooling systems. Guidelines have been set to protect drivers during races labeled as ‘heat hazards’ starting in 2025.
In other changes, the FIA decided to remove the limits on the number of gearboxes teams can use. They noted that current gearbox reliability makes monitoring unnecessary. There will also be clearer rules for starts during both sprint and grand prix races to avoid confusion, like what happened at last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix.
Looking further ahead, the 2026 regulations are set to enhance aerodynamic performance and improve energy management systems. This shift will move F1 closer to a balanced power split between traditional engines and hybrid components.
