Updated Feb. 19: The new iPhone has been officially unveiled.
Apple is gearing up to launch a new product. It’s likely the fourth-generation iPhone SE, which is known for being the budget-friendly option. Recent talks suggest that this new phone may actually be named the iPhone 16E.
The name first popped up in December and was initially doubted, but then a reliable leaker, Majin Bu, backed it up. They mentioned that sources have seen packaging for the new iPhone SE 4 and that the design will be more aligned with the iPhone 16 instead of the iPhone 14. However, it might miss some features like the Dynamic Island and the action button.
This design aspect is quite interesting. Although it draws inspiration from the latest model, the uniqueness of its design justifies the new name. To give you context, the iPhone 14 is 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches in size, and the iPhone 16 is just a tad taller at 5.81 inches.
In a recent newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman pointed out that the new phone’s design might be so different from previous SE models that it deserves a fresh name. CEO Tim Cook also hinted at this during a recent announcement, referring to the upcoming product as the “newest member of the family.”
This makes sense because the iPhone SE has traditionally been marketed as a cost-effective smartphone that closely mimics older designs. However, this new model appears to be breaking that mold. It’s expected to maintain a single camera, possibly with a 48-megapixel resolution, differing from the dual-camera setup of the recent iPhones.
We still don’t know if this iteration will feature the Dynamic Island or any of the new customizable options found in the latest releases. Also, it’s likely to come with the A18 processor, enhancing its compatibility with Apple’s emerging technologies.
If the new phone does drop the SE designation, it may lead to a shift in price expectations. The current SE model starts at $429, but with these upgrades—like an OLED display and Face ID—a price increase wouldn’t be too surprising.
On the flip side, keeping the SE name could leverage its strong recognition. The name has lasted across generations without tying it to specific numbers, allowing for a longer lifespan in Apple’s lineup.
All of these details will become clearer soon, as the launch event is approaching.
