Olivia Munn Turns Down 7-Figure Offer to Speak Out on ‘Traumatic’ Movie Set Experience: Here’s Why

Olivia Munn recently shared a powerful story about turning down over a million dollars to stay silent about a troubling experience on a movie set. During her conversation with Monica Lewinsky on the podcast Reclaiming, Munn opened up about the incident, which she says happened early in the #MeToo movement, starting around 2017.

Munn described feeling uncomfortable during the shoot, saying, “There were things that happened on this movie set that were really not OK.” This led her to file complaints with the studio. Eventually, they offered her a significant sum of money, along with a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), in exchange for her silence and an apology.

She refused, stating, “I’m not signing an NDA.” Munn felt signing it would undermine her experience, especially as the #MeToo movement was highlighting the issues of silence and complicity in Hollywood. She feared that if she accepted the money, it would be seen as prioritizing money over her voice. Munn was determined to stand by her truth.

Despite her lawyer’s suggestion to consider the offer, Munn was resolute. She remembered someone telling her, “This is a lot of money; you’d be crazy not to take this.” But Munn replied, “It’s not a lot of money for me to lose my voice.” Walking away from that situation made her feel empowered.

Interestingly, shortly after her decision, California passed a law making NDAs related to sexual misconduct unenforceable. Munn reflected on her choice, acknowledging that while she doesn’t regret it, she made that decision in anger. She learned the importance of processing her feelings and the value of reflection before acting.

This isn’t the first time Munn has spoken out about issues in the industry. In 2017, she accused director Brett Ratner of sexual harassment, claiming he masturbated in front of her. Additionally, while working on the 2018 film Predators, she raised concerns about acting alongside a registered sex offender connected to director Shane Black.

Olivia Munn’s experiences highlight the importance of speaking up against misconduct and standing firm in one’s convictions, especially in the face of significant pressure.
