In a world facing serious health challenges, the leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO) is more important than ever. Pillay emphasized the need for WHO’s guidance in protecting public health and strengthening healthcare systems globally. He expressed solidarity with the professionals at WHO who work hard every day to save lives and enhance health outcomes.
The letter from the World Council of Churches (WCC) highlights strong support for the WHO. For over 50 years, WCC and its 352 member churches, spanning over 120 countries and representing more than 580 million people, have collaborated closely with WHO. Pillay appreciates this long-standing relationship and points out key areas of partnership, such as primary healthcare, promoting breastfeeding, access to essential medications, and tackling issues like HIV, Ebola, and COVID-19.
Despite facing budget cuts, WHO has shown great strength in tackling global health issues. It has improved disease monitoring, bolstered health services in low- and middle-income countries, and promoted universal health coverage.
Pillay urges that WHO needs more financial and political backing from member countries and global organizations. WCC is willing to rally its churches and faith communities to push their governments to see how vital WHO is for global health security. Funding must remain steady and sufficient for WHO to effectively fulfill its mission.
