Embracing School Spirit: How Cameron University Students Shine Through the Chill

LAWTON, Okla. – Excitement is in the air at Cameron University as Homecoming Week kicks off, even with chilly temperatures and a few event cancellations.

Homecoming may feel different without a football team, but that hasn’t dampened the school spirit. For many Aggies, this week is all about celebrating their community—whether through clubs, sports, or Greek life.

This year, activities are back and in full swing. Students are looking forward to various events, including a decorating contest hosted by the Knitting and Crochet Club. They’ve created a giant “C” for Cameron and will compete against other student organizations for the best design.

We caught up with Ramona Villegas, the club’s communications officer and a sports show host, to learn more about their preparation. “We started making patch squares two weeks ago,” Villegas explained. “We’re really hoping to win the competition with our decorated ‘C.’”

She also praised the other groups participating: “They’ve all done such beautiful work. If you can, check them out in the MCC lobby.”

With campus life returning to normal, Aggies can also look forward to some thrilling games. As the host of the Aggie Line-Up, Villegas is busy keeping students informed about all the important game dates. “I’m making sure we have the right times since both games are at home. The girls recently broke a losing streak, and I’m really proud of them.”

The cold weather hasn’t affected the spirit of the Aggies. Tonight, students will dance and crown new homecoming monarchs. Villegas expressed her gratitude for this tradition, saying, “I’m so glad Cameron does homecoming to honor our athletes and give students a chance to be on the court. It’s an amazing opportunity.”
