Lubbock Christian University’s Markwardt Named National Pitcher of the Week: A Stellar Achievement in College Baseball

Dallas, Texas (February 20, 2025) – Ryan Markwardt, a senior left-hander from Lubbock Christian University, has been named the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. This recognition follows his earlier honors as both the South Central Region and Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week.

In his recent game against Oklahoma Christian, Markwardt pitched a remarkable complete-game shutout. He faced just one more than the minimum number of batters, giving up only one hit to the first batter. After that, he struck out nine players and retired the last 19 batters he faced.

This season, Markwardt holds a record of 2-1 with a 3.31 ERA over 16.1 innings pitched. Batters are struggling against him, with a mere .153 average. His statistics indicate he’s been tough to hit, posting a WHIP of 0.92. He stands out in the Lone Star Conference, ranking fifth in strikeouts with 20 while allowing just six walks. Notably, he hasn’t allowed a two-out hit yet this season, going 16 at-bats without yielding a run with two outs.

Lubbock Christian’s overall record is now 7-5, benefiting from a strong performance recently, with seven wins in their last eight games. This weekend, they will face St. Mary’s in a four-game series in San Antonio. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
