New research shows that adding more flavonoid-rich foods to your diet can help older adults maintain strength, brain function, and overall health as they age.
A recent study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looked into how flavonoids—the healthy compounds found in many plants—affect aging. Flavonoids are abundant in foods like apples, berries, tea, red wine, and dark chocolate. These compounds not only taste great but also help fight oxidative stress and inflammation, which can slow down the aging process.
The study involved two large groups: female nurses from the Nurses’ Health Study and male health professionals from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Participants answered questions about their diets and health over many years, allowing researchers to track changes in their health related to flavonoid intake.
Participants shared details about their medical history and lifestyle choices. They were followed over several years, with regular food assessments to see how much flavonoid-rich food they consumed.
Researchers measured frailty, mental health, and physical abilities using various health surveys. They found that older adults with higher flavonoid diets experienced less frailty, better mental health, and improved physical function compared to those who ate fewer flavonoids.
Among the findings, those who consumed the most flavonoids had a 15% lower risk of frailty and a 12% reduced risk of poor mental health. In contrast, men showed weaker associations, with only slight benefits observed in mental health. Certain foods made a big difference—tea, apples, blueberries, and red wine stood out as particularly beneficial.
Notably, increasing the intake of flavonoid-rich foods even a small amount could significantly reduce the chances of experiencing frailty or poor mental health. For example, increasing these foods by three servings per week led to an 8-11% lower risk of health issues in women.
This research points to a simple but effective way to support healthy aging: eat more flavonoid-rich foods. It’s especially important to maintain or increase these foods over time to get the maximum benefit in preventing mental decline and physical issues as you age.
Overall, focusing on flavonoid intake can be an easy diet change to help improve health as we get older. With delicious options like fruits, tea, and a glass of red wine, healthy aging can be both achievable and enjoyable.
