Get Ready for Softball Action!
Loyola Chicago’s softball team, with a record of 2-8, is heading to Greenville, North Carolina, for the Pirate Invitational at East Carolina University. There, they’ll compete against Boston College, East Carolina, and Canisius over the weekend. Unfortunately, all games scheduled for Friday, February 21, were canceled due to bad weather.
Weekend Schedule:
- Saturday, Feb. 22: vs. Canisius at 9 a.m. | vs. Boston College at 11:30 a.m.
- Sunday, Feb. 23: vs. Canisius at 8 a.m.
Quick Highlights:
- Coach Alicia Abbott earned her 100th career win after a thrilling 2-1 victory against St. John’s on February 14.
- Loyola’s first wins this season came against North Dakota (Feb. 7) and St. John’s (Feb. 14).
- Liz Sedakis is the standout hitter with a batting average of .375, closely followed by Sierra Sass at .333. Sierra leads in on-base percentage at .500.
- In the pitching department, Maddy Hickey has an ERA of 15.40 over 5 innings. Peyton Pepkowski has an 8.96 ERA through 25 innings. Andie Broniewicz leads with 18 strikeouts so far.
- This year’s 2-8 start marks Loyola’s toughest beginning since starting 2-9 in 2021.
- In the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll, Loyola is ranked No. 3 with 84 points.
Scouting the Opponents:
East Carolina enters the tournament with a 5-4 record. Currently on a one-game losing streak, they recently lost to UMBC but previously had strong performances, including wins against No. 22 Boston. Kanisha Anderson shines on their team with 10 runs and 11 hits, while Kendall Frost leads in pitching with an impressive 1.14 ERA over nine games.
Boston College also has a 5-5 record. Their biggest win of the season was an 8-2 triumph over Indiana State. In their latest tournament, they went 2-3. Zoe Hines is leading the charge with a .393 batting average, along with noteworthy power statistics.
Canisius, sitting at 2-5, started with a win against IU Indy before facing four losses. They recently turned things around with a win over Furman. Ella Johel leads the team in batting with a remarkable average of .524, and Olivia Manchester stands out in the pitching rotation with an ERA of 2.10.
