Football star Jenni Hermoso’s lawyer announced plans to appeal after a court handed down a fine to Luis Rubiales for kissing her without consent during the 2023 World Cup. Rubiales, the former head of Spain’s football federation, was convicted of sexual assault and fined €10,800 (£8,942).
While Rubiales was acquitted of coercion, which involved allegations that he pressured Hermoso into claiming the kiss was consensual, Hermoso’s lawyer, Angel Chavarria, stated that Hermoso would be appealing the verdict but did not specify the grounds for the appeal.
The court also imposed a one-year ban on Rubiales from approaching Hermoso within 200 meters or contacting her. Prosecutors sought a prison sentence for him, and Rubiales has indicated he plans to appeal the court’s decision as well.
The incident occurred as the Spanish team celebrated their victory over England in Sydney. Rubiales famously grabbed Hermoso’s head and kissed her on the lips. He later claimed it was an “act of affection” and insisted he believed Hermoso had consented. However, Hermoso maintained that she did not give consent and described the incident as having “stained one of the happiest days of my life.” This controversy led to widespread protests and demands for Rubiales’s resignation.
In addition, three of Rubiales’s former colleagues, including coach Jorge Vilda and others, faced similar accusations of coercion but were ultimately acquitted of all charges.
