In a tragic incident in southeastern Brazil, a bus carrying university students collided with a truck, resulting in the deaths of 12 passengers and injuries to 21 others. The crash occurred late Thursday night near Nuporanga, about 370 kilometers from São Paulo.
The truck driver, who sustained injuries as well, attempted to escape the scene but was captured and taken to the hospital. He now faces charges for fleeing the scene, involuntary homicide, and bodily harm.
All the deceased were students from the University of Franca. Those injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Local news reported images of the wreckage, showing the bus severely damaged on its left side.
In response to the tragedy, São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas announced three days of official mourning throughout the state. The university expressed its deep sorrow, stating that the students’ dreams were abruptly ended by this tragic event.
This accident is part of a larger concern in Brazil, where traffic accidents claimed over 10,000 lives in 2024 alone, according to the Ministry of Transportation. Previous incidents, such as a collision involving another bus that killed 38 people in Minas Gerais last December, highlight the ongoing issues with road safety.
Last September, a bus carrying the Coritiba Crocodiles football team tipped over, resulting in three fatalities. The team was en route to a championship game in Rio de Janeiro, which was ultimately canceled due to the accident.
