Dirk Nowitzki, a legend of the Mavericks, recently spoke at Ticketstock, an event for fans hosted by Sportsradio 96.7 FM/1310 The Ticket. He shared his thoughts on the Luka Doncic trade and his experience attending Luka’s debut with the Lakers.
Dirk recalled the moment he learned about the trade. He was vacationing in the Maldives with his family when his phone started buzzing with news. “I was shocked, just like everyone else,” he said. It took him about an hour to process everything happening on social media. He couldn’t believe it.
Upon returning home, Dirk chatted with Luka. He felt disappointed for him and decided to travel to Los Angeles for Luka’s first game with his new team. “I wanted to be there for him,” Dirk explained. Having played alongside Luka in his last season, he felt a special bond and wanted to lend support during this significant change. Even though it was strange to see Luka in Lakers colors, Dirk’s admiration for him remained strong.
Dirk noted how surreal it was being in the stadium while Luka played for the Lakers. “I’ll always be a Luka fan,” he said, emphasizing his loyalty. After watching him play, Dirk felt Luka was beginning to embrace the opportunity with the Lakers. He recognized the team’s potential and praised Luka for his upbeat attitude moving forward.
When asked about the current Lakers roster, Dirk expressed confidence in their talent when healthy. He highlighted the skills of Anthony Davis and Max Christie, noting that both players could make significant contributions. Dirk has always admired Davis’s game, appreciating his versatility and defensive skills. Christie surprised him with his performance and shooting ability, which are essential for today’s game. He acknowledged that health is crucial for any team’s success, especially considering the injuries the Mavs have faced this season.
Dirk also acknowledged Jason Kidd’s exceptional coaching amidst numerous challenges. The team managed to win games despite ongoing injuries, showing resilience and camaraderie. Dirk remains hopeful that the Mavericks will get healthy and make a strong playoff push.
