THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men’s basketball team is gearing up for an exciting end to their home games. On Saturday, February 22, they will celebrate Senior Day ahead of their match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
Before facing UTRGV at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nicholls (16-10, 10-6 SLC) will honor its senior players: Robert Brown III, Mekhi Collins, Byron Ireland, Caleb Robinson, Jaylen Searles, and Jamal West Jr.
The Colonels are tied for fourth place in the Southland Conference standings, alongside the Islanders (17-11, 10-6 SLC). Since Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the previous matchup, Nicholls needs a victory on Monday to create a tiebreaker for the upcoming SLC Tournament. The top two teams in the conference earn byes into the semifinals, while the third and fourth seeds receive one bye.
Nicholls recently broke a two-game losing streak with a strong road win against New Orleans, their seventh win of the season. They have not lost three consecutive games this year. In that matchup, Nicholls led by as much as 21 points, with Ireland scoring 19 points and West collecting 12 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double.
UTRGV is fighting to stay competitive for a postseason spot after their loss to UIW dropped them to ninth place in the conference. Earlier this season, the Vaqueros faced Nicholls and lost 82-75.
