In a tragic incident in Mulhouse, France, a knife attack has resulted in one death and left two police officers severely injured. The attacker, a 37-year-old man from Algeria, shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the assault, prompting authorities to classify the event as a potential terrorist act.
The attack occurred as police were providing security at a demonstration supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo. One of the injured officers was stabbed in the neck, while the other suffered a chest wound. A civilian who tried to help was fatally stabbed.
The suspect had been on a terrorism watch list and was under a deportation order, highlighting failures in the system. President Emmanuel Macron stated that there is “no doubt” this was an Islamist terrorist attack. He also expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combat terrorism in France.
Local leaders are deeply affected by this incident. Mulhouse Mayor Michele Lutz shared on social media that “horror has seized our city.” Prime Minister François Bayrou added that the country is in mourning as fanaticism has struck again, hoping for the swift recovery of the injured.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau plans to visit the site later, emphasizing the importance of support in such tragic times.
