A police officer lost his life responding to a shooting at a hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on Saturday morning. The West York Police Department confirmed the tragic news on their Facebook page.
UPMC Memorial hospital reported that there was a gunman on the premises and shots were fired. Thankfully, the shooter is now deceased.
Ted Czech, a public information officer from York County’s Office of Emergency Management, stated that the threat is over and an investigation is ongoing.
Officers are present at the hospital, directing families of patients to a safe area across the street while they assess the situation.
According to Susan Manko, a spokesperson for UPMC Memorial, no patients were harmed, and the hospital is secure now.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has been updated about the shooting and is on his way to the scene. He reassured the public that state police and emergency management agencies are actively involved.
Governor Shapiro urged everyone to follow local authorities’ advice and avoid the area.
In a joint statement, Pennsylvania state Sen. Dawn Keefer and state Rep. Seth Grove expressed their prayers for the victims and their families. They stressed their sorrow over this violent incident and praised first responders for their prompt actions.
