Saskatchewan is finally moving past a long stretch of extreme cold. Many towns experienced temperatures plunging to -40 degrees Celsius, breaking records over the Family Day weekend.
Shannon Moodie, a meteorologist from Environment and Climate Change Canada, shared that relief is on the way. “It really feels like it’s been all February that it’s just been well below normal,” she noted.
Warmer air from the Pacific is mixing with gentle weather systems, pushing into the prairies. This means we can expect a break from the bitter chill for at least the next week, and maybe even longer.
While it’s uncertain if another blast of Arctic air will hit soon, there’s good news: March is approaching, which brings longer days and a general warming trend. Moodie added, “The weather we will experience won’t be far above normal, but after such cold spells, it feels amazing.”
For reference, typical highs in Saskatoon and Regina around this time are about -4 degrees during the day, with lows nearing -15 at night. So, even a slight rise in temperature will be a welcome change!
