LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Pope Francis is facing serious health challenges after a hospital visit for bronchitis. The Vatican announced that the 88-year-old pontiff is currently in critical condition due to an “asthma-like respiratory crisis.”
During his treatment, he received oxygen and a blood transfusion after doctors found he was suffering from anemia.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a physician at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, described the situation: “It’s critical due to his age and chronic lung disease. However, he’s stable now.”
Despite his condition, his doctors report the Pope is in good spirits, and many in Mid-Michigan are praying for his recovery. Lansing resident Mike C. shared his concerns, noting, “It’s worrisome because he’s the leader of our church and he’s getting up there in age.”
Fr. Jim Rolph, preparing for mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, said the community is lifting up their prayers for the Holy Father. “Pope Francis has shown us a path of mercy throughout his time as pope,” he remarked.
Rolph added that whatever happens next is part of God’s plan. He emphasized the importance of faith during uncertain times, stating, “We’re never truly ready to let someone go, but we must trust in God’s will.”
Vatican officials reported that the Pope has been alert, even spending part of Saturday in an armchair. However, they acknowledged he is feeling more discomfort compared to Friday.
