Urgent Call for Environmental Protection: Insights from Labhsetwar – The Times of India
Nagpur University hosted a lecture series on February 13, focusing on “Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities”. The sociology department led the event, supported by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Prashant Bokare and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajendra Kakade.

Nitin Labhsetwar, chief scientist at NEERI, was the chief guest. He pointed out that our resource consumption is fueling climate change. He stressed the need for awareness to ensure sustainable development. Labhsetwar highlighted key challenges linked to climate change, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, drought, water shortages, elevated sea levels, biodiversity loss, health risks, and agricultural impacts. To combat these issues, he emphasized the importance of focusing on environmental protection.

Dr. Jitendra Wasnik, head of the sociology department, praised the Labhsetwar Foundation for its initiatives. He noted that discussions on environmental awareness and social issues are vital for guiding the youth. Dr. Anant Labhsetwar, founder of the Labhsetwar Foundation, reiterated the foundation’s commitment to social transformation and public engagement.

Dr. Shyamrao Koreti, dean of the humanities faculty, spoke about the historical relationship between humans and nature. He pointed out that due to human activities for comfort, we are witnessing negative consequences to our environment. He urged attendees to discuss and act on environmental matters promptly.

The event featured other dignitaries, including Satyapriya Indurwade and Nitin Dongarwar. Organized by Sadaf Khan, the program concluded with a vote of thanks from Siddhesh Shende. Faculty, researchers, and students from various departments attended, contributing to a successful and informative session where the importance of addressing climate change was clearly highlighted.
