2025 SAG Awards: Why ‘Conclave’ is a Must-Watch Sensation!

The papal thriller “Conclave” took home the top trophy at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards, surprising many by breaking the winning streak of “Anora,” which had been favored in earlier award shows.

In recent years, the film that wins the SAG Award often goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. “Oppenheimer,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “CODA” are recent examples of this trend. Although “Conclave” only has one other major win from the BAFTAs so far, its SAG victory keeps the Oscar race interesting as we move towards the ceremony on March 2.

This year’s lead actor category also saw a surprise. Timothée Chalamet, nominated for his role in “A Complete Unknown,” won for playing Bob Dylan. He had been up against Adrien Brody, who had been the favorite all season with his film “The Brutalist.” Chalamet expressed his ambition during his acceptance speech, saying, “I want to be one of the greats.”

In terms of individual performances, winners at the SAG Awards have mostly repeated their success at the Oscars over the past three years. However, last year, Lily Gladstone, who won the SAG for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” lost the Oscar to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.”

This year promises to be competitive for Best Actress as well. Demi Moore from “The Substance” and Mikey Madison from “Anora” have been trading wins throughout the awards season. Meanwhile, Fernanda Torres, who won a Golden Globe for “I’m Still Here,” was not nominated at SAG but has been gaining traction with Oscar voters lately.

At the SAG Awards, Moore emerged victorious again. She delivered an inspiring speech dedicated to “that little girl who didn’t believe in herself.” With growing emotion, she concluded with a heartfelt “thank you.”
