LOS ANGELES — At the Shrine Auditorium, the cast of “Conclave” received cheers as they headed backstage after winning the best ensemble award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The group, featuring heavyweights like Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, and John Lithgow, basked in their moment of glory, especially with Harrison Ford, who had just presented them their prize, walking alongside them.
As they moved backstage, an Associated Press reporter trailed behind, capturing the scene. A photographer called out for Ford to join in for a group photo, but he politely stepped back, not wanting to intrude. Meanwhile, Rossellini suddenly realized she needed to grab her purse, prompting a small detour as Lithgow also went back inside to find his wife.
Jamie Lee Curtis approached the two actors, bubbling with excitement and offering congratulations. As Fiennes moved on, he encountered Ariana Grande, whose own cast from “Wicked” had been competing against “Conclave.” She beamed, saying, “Yay, congratulations! I was really happy for you guys; I was screaming!” She also introduced Fiennes to her date, Ethan Slater, a Broadway star.
At a nearby station where the real SAG awards are given (the ones on stage are just props), Jane Fonda, the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award, joined in the festivities. “Are you guys just hanging out at the bar?” she teased. Fiennes complimented her powerful speech from earlier that evening, telling her she “nailed it.” Rossellini soon returned, giving Fonda a warm hug and introducing her to Sergio Castellitto, who played a conservative character in “Conclave.” They joked about their roles as the villain and the conservative cardinal.
Timothée Chalamet, fresh from winning the best male actor award for “A Complete Unknown,” arrived to collect his statuette. Fiennes shouted his name, and they exchanged friendly greetings, highlighting the camaraderie among the night’s stars. With the Oscar awards just a week away, their victories changed the narrative for what many considered front-runners. The presumed favorite, “Anora,” left empty-handed.
As the group continued, they paused to sign show posters before heading to the press area for photos. Actors often remark on the weight of their awards, and Kieran Culkin even made it part of his acceptance speech. Fiennes and Lithgow demonstrated their strength, playfully lifting their trophies while waiting for their turn in front of the cameras.
Later, they participated in a press conference, then headed to the official after-party where they got their statuettes engraved. Before leaving, Lithgow took a moment to pose with a group of firefighters who had bravely battled recent wildfires in Los Angeles, earning a standing ovation at the event.
Inside the SAG Awards ballroom, the firefighters mingled, capturing photos with various stars, including Ford and Jeff Goldblum. The atmosphere buzzed with celebrated actors chatting casually, showcasing the unique blend of talent in attendance.
This year’s SAG Awards served not only to celebrate achievements but also to remind attendees about the union’s recent historic strike. Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland emphasized the need to support striking colleagues in the video game industry and highlighted the importance of legislation to limit the use of artificial intelligence in performance. “As I look out at our guests, I see some of the most deep-faked people in the world,” he remarked, drawing attention to the pressing issues facing the industry.
