12 Lives Lost: FDA Reports Listeria Outbreak Tied to Supplemental Shakes – What You Need to Know

A troubling outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes has resulted in twelve deaths and sickened at least 38 individuals across 21 states. Most of those infected were hospitalized. The source of this outbreak has been linked to frozen supplemental shakes produced by Prairie Farms Dairy, based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. These shakes were primarily sent to hospitals and long-term care facilities.

The affected products include Sysco Imperial and Lyons ReadyCare shakes. Following the grim reports, both companies initiated a recall of these shakes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating the situation on-site.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been tracking these illnesses since 2018. Initial investigations did not yield enough data to pinpoint the source, leading to its reopening in October when six new cases emerged. Recently, the outbreak strain of bacteria was found in samples from Prairie Farms.

The CDC suspects that the number of actual cases might be higher than reported. They urge people not to consume the recalled shakes. It is also important to clean any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the products.

In a statement, Sysco expressed condolences to the victims and their families. The company has halted sales of other products from Prairie Farms and is focusing on food safety practices to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

Listeria is a serious bacterium that can be fatal. It is responsible for nearly 260 deaths each year in the U.S., making it the third leading cause of death related to foodborne illness. Symptoms can appear days or even weeks after exposure and may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and more severe signs like a stiff neck or confusion. Vulnerable groups include older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
