Joy Reid is leaving MSNBC, marking the end of her show, “The ReidOut.” The announcement came from the network’s new president in a memo to staff.
Since its debut in 2020, “The ReidOut” has been a key part of MSNBC’s evening line-up. During the show, Joy engaged in conversations with a range of guests, exploring important topics like politics, race, and social justice.
News of the show’s cancellation drew mixed reactions online, with many fans expressing their disappointment. They highlighted how Reid’s work has highlighted voices often left out of mainstream media. In her memo, MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler acknowledged Reid’s contributions and thanked her for her years at the network.
Kutler also mentioned that in the coming weeks, various rotating hosts will fill the slot, including Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele, and Alicia Menendez. These hosts currently lead another MSNBC program but will transition to a new ensemble news show during Reid’s former time slot.
In response to the news, Reid took to social media to express her gratitude to supporters. She mentioned feeling a mix of emotions, including anger and disappointment, but ultimately found herself thankful for her experience. On a YouTube call, she discussed the significance of her work, reflecting on tackling crucial issues like Black Lives Matter and global conflicts, stressing that she stood up for what she believed in.
Over the years, Reid has received numerous accolades, including two NAACP Image Awards this past weekend. Her show was recognized as an outstanding news series, and she was honored for her biography, “Medgar and Myrlie: Medgar Evers and the Love Story That Awakened America.”
MSNBC is also planning more changes beyond Reid’s departure. Kutler announced a shake-up in programming that will occur in late April, including moving Jen Psaki to a prime-time slot and shifting Rachel Maddow’s show back to Mondays. Some shows, like “José Díaz-Balart Reports,” will be impacted by new operational strategies, as MSNBC consolidates its broadcasting locations.
As MSNBC evolves under new leadership, these changes come during a significant transition period, with the network separating from NBC News later this year. In a noteworthy announcement, NBC veteran Lester Holt also shared his plans to step down as the anchor of “Nightly News” to focus more on “Dateline” programming.
